The TimberLex database provides free and easy access to a set of comprehensive country-specific legal information - including legislation, policies and international commitments - on forest management, timber production and trade
Legal country profiles of major timber-trading countries are organized around a set of Guiding Legal Elements (GLEs) for timber legality developed by FAO and grouped in four clusters to capture the different stages of the timber value chain:
- 1. Land Tenure and Forest Management
- 2. Timber Harvesting Activities
- 3. Processing, Transport and Trade
- 4. Taxes and Fees
The GLEs serve as an index of the legal documents collected - which pertain to different sectors related to the legality of timber - and point users to a summary of applicable rules for any country followed by relevant extracts of national legislation.
It is also possible to compare legal provisions from different countries using the GLEs as search topics.
